The Hohokam initially lived in the Tempe, AZ area but abandoned the area in the 15th century, now Tempe, AZ is home to more than 160,000 people. After the Maricopa and Phoenix railroad was built in 1887 Tempe became an economic hub for the surrounding agricultural area. The completion of the Roosevelt dam in 1911 guaranteed the farming community enough water to meet valley’s needs
